Pedagogy Courses

North York, Ontario

October 1-2, 2017

 From Instruction to Inspiration:

New Paradigms in Teaching Harmony

The Joe Show comes to Toronto! You are invited to attend this dynamic harmony pedagogy course as I lead participants in a comprehensive exploration of Celebrate Theory: Level 9 Harmony, the official textbook co-authored by Dr. Julia Galieva-Szokolay and myself. Our three intensive morning-and-afternoon sessions will include:

  • a discussion around the pacing of the course material contained in the book
  • new vocabulary and question models
  • working sessions through selected written exercises (SATB/keyboard style writing)
  • aspects of harmonic and structural analysis including newly-introduced concepts (such as tonal hierarchy, melodic periods, balanced binary and more!)
  • aural analysis: creative exercises in critical listening drawing on classical and popular music

These information-packed sessions will be enhanced with power point presentations, audio/video clips – even a Jeopardy-style game (!) – to illustrate how we can elevate examination-based teaching to exhilaration-based teaching!

Dates:

Sunday, October 1, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. * and 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Monday, October 2, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

*Participants will be offered a complementary lunch.
